LAWSUITS FILED AGAINST ROUNDUP CREATOR, MONSANTO

Product Liability Lawyer in Charleston, West Virginia

Hot on the heels of two high-profile lawsuits over the last year or so, Monsanto lost a third trial in a row as a jury voted against the company in relation to evidence that their famous RoundUp weedkiller can lead to cancer. The manufacturer was ordered to pay a monumental $2.055-billion in damages and still faces another 13,400 cases from individual farmers and gardeners. It is believed that they will lose the majority of those smaller cases too, despite the company’s continued pleas that their products are safe.

What Are The Cancer-Causing Chemicals?

Despite questions being raised regarding the scientific evidence and the jury’s verdict in the most recent case, RoundUp is believed to be a cancer-causing weedkiller due to the presence of a chemical known as glyphosate. While the World Health Organization (WHO) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are in dispute as to whether it is a carcinogenic chemical, with the former stating that it is, the chemical is very much at the center of all the legal disputes.

RoundUp is considered safe for most home users, especially when the right level of protection is used,  due to the small volumes involved. However, farmers and groundskeepers that use large quantities on a regular basis, or who may get soaked in the weedkiller due to spills could be at risk.

What Are The Potential Side Effects?

Exposure to the RoundUp weedkiller may cause individuals to experience a number of side effects.  Fever, shortness of breath, fatigue, anemia, chest pain, swelling of the abdomen, and swollen lymph nodes are all common symptoms that may be linked to spilling the Monsanto product on your skin or being exposed to it for extended periods of time.

As the number of cases against Monsanto grows, links between symptoms and the development of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which are a group of potentially deadly lymphoma cancers, have been shown. Those suffering from any of those symptoms will, therefore, want to see their doctor at the earliest stage possible to be tested for such cancers.

If the user is diagnosed with these types of cancers following the usage of the RoundUp product, filing a lawsuit may be possible. Although, naturally, recovering from the illness will remain the priority.

Not only do consumers need to worry about the potential side effects of using RoundUp, but US Recall News, also reports that over the past 25 years, there has been a rise in the use of RoundUp in non-organic, GMO foods and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. This is again believed to be due to the product’s main ingredient, glyphosate.

Filing a Lawsuit Against Weedkiller Companies

Manufacturers of products (not just weedkillers) that could potentially cause harm to the user should clearly state potential issues on the label. A lack of information regarding the possible side effects of Roundup is, therefore, one of the chief reasons for the lawsuits being raised in recent months. Farmers, gardeners, or anyone else that has been diagnosed with cancer and suspects that using the Monsanto product could be the source of their illness should seek legal advice as soon as possible.
